5 Snow Day Activities Your Kids Will Love

With winter approaching, the likelihood of some snow days occurring sooner than later is going up. And, as every parent knows, snow days can get hectic fast if you don’t have a plan to keep your kiddos entertained. So today we’re going to be covering five snow day activities you can implement in a pinch, even when a snow day catches you by surprise!

And don’t worry, all of these activities can be done indoors. In case your snow day is particularly treacherous and building snowmen isn’t in the cards.

1. Bake Some Treats

First of all, what’s cozier than baking some sweet treats when it’s called outside? Nothing! So the very first activity I’ll suggest is warming up the oven and getting to work.

This can also serve as an impromptu life skills lesson for your little ones, as you get them involved with the process. Let them “help” in any way that’s age appropriate for them. Whether that’s by stirring the bowl, or adding sprinkles to the goodies when they come out of the oven.

Just be wary of the sugar rush that could follow!

2. Make A Cozy Fort

Next, you could create your very own indoor fort for your children to enjoy. This is a great activity for surprise snow days, because you already have everything you need in your home. Blankets, pillows, and furniture can all be creatively combined to form a cozy little spot for your kiddos to hang out.

Kids love getting to experience new things, and thrive if you can create small shifts in their environment for special occasions. So they’ll really love this idea if you can pull it off.

Plus, you can easily combine this activity with some of the others on this list. By performing other activities within the fort you made. Especially if you can make it big enough to fit you as well.

3. Watch A Movie

When your kids are feeling a little more low energy, watching a movie can be a classic way to entertain the whole family. And you get bonus points if you pick a seasonal film that captures the mood of the day.

I suggest scheduling this sometime during the afternoon when everyone hits a little slump, or perhaps a movie night is a better fit for your family! Either way, you can combine this activity with both of the previous ones… Such as watching a short film while your goodies are still cooking, or watching it from the comfort of your newly constructed fort.

4. Play Some Board Games

One of the more engaging snow day activities I want to suggest is to play a board game. This is a classic one because… everyone has board games in their home already, it can involve the whole family, it’s appropriate for kids of any age, and it’s a great way to exert some mental energy that your kids might have pent up.

So if you’ve been looking for an excuse to battle it out with some Hungry Hippo or strike some deals in Monopoly, this is it.

5. Grab Some Fun Printables

Lastly, you could always get some budget-friendly entertainment out of purchasing and printing out some printables off the internet. There are a lot of them available online nowadays, especially on sites like Etsy. Ranging from random activity pages to printable coloring books.

And not only is there plenty of options, for virtually any occasion… (Christmas, Valentine’s Day, winter-themed, and even, you guessed it… snow days.) But you could also access them from the comfort of your own home, if the snow day caught you by surprise and you don’t have any coloring books stocked up.

Final Thoughts

Snow days can be stressful, especially when they’re unplanned. But they can also be really fun, and a great way to form special memories with your kids. And hopefully these snow day activities can help you achieve the latter instead of the former. Just remember to make the most out of each moment.
