1. Take your prenatal vitamins!

First things first… you need to be taking your prenatal vitamins religiously. This is because they’re packed full of nutrients that your baby needs in order to grow and thrive. Such as…

  • Folic acid (which helps prevent babies from forming neural birth defects)
  • Iron (which you need to support the increased blood levels in your body during pregnancy)
  • And calcium (which will support the bone/teeth growth in your baby)

Of course, these things can be obtained through diet. But it’s nearly impossible to get as much of them as you (and your baby) needs without the help of a prenatal vitamin. So talk with your doctor or do your own research to decide which one is best for you, and starting taking them immediately if you aren’t already.

2. Avoid the potential urge to eat unhealthy foods.

Next, I want to talk about pregnancy cravings… Which is a very well known side effect of expecting a baby, and an almost celebrated one. I know that for myself, I craved a lot of Taco Bell with both my girls, chicken with the first, and Oreo blasts with my second.

But, while I’m not going to tell you to ignore all your cravings (because there’s nothing wrong with indulging here and there)… It is important to keep in mind that you are quite literally growing a baby inside of you, and the nutrition that you consume is being shared with your little one.

So choosing healthy options 90% of the time will help make sure you both thrive.

3. Stay as active as you can.

And along those same lines, you need to prioritize staying active throughout your pregnancy as well. With the exception of if you’re supposed to be on bed rest, which is a reality for some expectant moms and is something that should be taken seriously!

But if you’ve got the go ahead from your doctor, try to make sure to stay moving throughout your pregnancy. Whether this be through talking a walk, doing some yoga, or even fitting a little cardio in. Just be sure to respect your body, honor how you feel, and double check that any exercise you want to do is safe for you and your little one.

I think this article by Better Health has a lot of valuable information on this topic if you want to take a look at it.

4. Take advantage of all the great pregnancy products out there.

One great thing about pregnant nowadays is that you have access to so many helpful products! So take advantage of it, and be sure to stock up on any pregnancy essentials you might need. Plus, if you’re having a specific problem then you could always do a few searches and see if there’s anything that could help alleviate it.

For now though, I have a few suggestions for things I think could benefit every first time mom…

  • A pregnancy pillow! Not only does having one of these help you stay comfier throughout the night, which is something many pregnant women struggle with… But it also keeps you in the proper alignment, and removes the risk of rolling over onto your tummy. So I highly suggest you get one if you don’t have one already.
  • A maternity band. I never had one of these when I was pregnant and I wish I had! Because these bands are built to lift your tummy upwards and distribute the baby’s weight more evenly. And this results in lessened pressure on the bladder, as well as less pain your lower back.
  • “Belly butter”! As I’m sure you know, pregnancy results in a lot of stretching of the skin in certain areas. And this can leave you with itchy skin, and even stretch marks afterwards. But nowadays they have a lot of creams that are meant to be applied to the belly to provide some relief from the pain and itching; and perhaps to reduce the appearance of those stretch marks as well. Specifically I’ve heard that the Burt’s Bees brand makes really great “belly butter”.

5. Don’t wait until the very end of your pregnancy to plan your birth.

And now, for the last of my first time mom pregnancy tips…

For some first time moms, the birth seems like the light at the end of the tunnel but for others it can be an anxiety inducing event to think about. Regardless of which camp you land in though, you’ll need to start creating your birth plan and discussing it with your doctor at around the seven month mark.

This will allow you to start mentally preparing for what’s coming. As well as give you more specific things to research, so that you can be as informed as possible going into the process. Just remember that, no matter what your preference is, birth doesn’t always go to plan and in-the-moment changes might be necessary. And part of preparing yourself for the birth is accepting that fact, and coming to peace with it.

In terms of a few of your options, you could look into…

  • Vaginal births (the most traditional method)
  • C-sections
  • Doula or midwife assisted births
  • Or even water births!
